Before the First Rain: An Orange County Drain Checklist
A simple early-season checklist for keeping leaves, debris, and household materials out of the storm-drain path.
Look before the weather changes
Before the first seasonal rain, take a slow walk around the exterior of the property. Notice where leaves, loose soil, pet waste, or stored materials could move with runoff toward a curb, gutter, or drain opening.
Clear the easy-to-reach areas
Sweep leaves and loose debris from paved areas instead of pushing them into the street. Keep roof-drain and gutter outlets clear where it is safe to do so, and avoid working from heights unless the task can be done safely.
Keep outdoor products contained
Store paint, oil, chemicals, and other products so rain cannot wash them away. If a spill occurs, follow the product instructions and local guidance rather than rinsing it toward a drain.
Notice plumbing symptoms indoors
Rain preparation is also a useful time to notice slow drains, recurring odors, or a toilet that does not behave normally. Those symptoms do not identify a cause on their own, but writing down where and when they happen can make a later assessment more useful.
Use the checklist as a seasonal habit
The goal is not to solve every drainage concern with a weekend task. It is to keep obvious debris out of the water path, reduce avoidable pollution, and recognize when a property-specific inspection may be appropriate.
