Turn off the water supply to the heater — the valve on the cold-water line at the top of the tank — clockwise until it stops. Then cut the heat: on a gas unit, turn the control dial to OFF; on an electric unit, flip the water heater's breaker. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call from outside.
The valve sits on the cold line feeding the top of the tank. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If it's stuck or corroded, don't force it — shut off the home's main water valve instead. That stops the tank from refilling and feeding the leak.
Gas: turn the dial on the gas control valve to OFF. Electric: switch off the water heater's breaker at the panel. A heating element or burner running on a draining tank can damage the unit and create a hazard.
Look at three spots. Fittings on top of the tank usually mean a loose or failed connection — often repairable. The temperature & pressure relief valve on the side dripping down a pipe can mean a faulty valve or excess pressure. Water seeping from the bottom of the tank itself usually means the tank has rusted through, and that means replacement.
Towels and a shallow pan handle a slow drip. If the tank sits in a garage or closet, move anything nearby that can't get wet. A leaking tank can go from drip to steady stream, so don't assume a small leak stays small.
Tell us where the water is coming from — top fittings, relief valve, or tank bottom — or just text a photo to (714) 587-5801. That's usually enough to know whether it's a repair or a replacement before we even arrive.
Call as soon as you've shut off the water and the heat — a leaking water heater doesn't heal, and a full tank holds a lot of water that ends up on your floor if the bottom lets go. If the leak is from the tank itself, or you have no hot water and a puddle, treat it as same-day. If you ever smell gas near the unit, leave first and call from outside.
